Looking for a book from your childhood?
Of course, if the book is a classic, you will probably have no problems locating the title and a source to buy it from. But, what if is just the book you are yearning to re-read (I am reaching the age of actually feeling nostalgia about things in childhood), or a book that was formative to you and that you want to share with your child?
Well, in my experience, google has not been a raving success in finding titles of books based on descriptions and plots. Thankfully, I was given some links and wanted to share them with you.
First off, I found the book I have been searching for after placing a post on the forum of Abebooks’ site, Book Sleuth. Within just a few hours of posting my plot summary, and approximate date of the book, someone posted back the title and even a book cover.
Anyway, back to the post – some other helpful links that I discovered are:
- Children’s Book Forum from Amazon
- Scholastic Books – Ebay Guides – this guide is a compilation of all the Scholastic book offerings from 1958 to 1979.
- Loganberry Stump the Book Seller – this costs $2 to submit a book search request.
- Project Wombat - if you are seriously working to find a title; this is a list-serve.
- Lost Titles, Forgotten Rhymes from the Library of Congress; for all other inquiries – no, really this is just a great compendium of resources to search for books.
Good luck – drop a note if you found a long lost childhood favorite!
Oh, and if you are curious, this was the book I had been searching for – I would say, you should preview it before passing it on to sensitive children because the themes within are a bit on the mature side:
